Project

Westerscheldetunnel, Netherlands

With a length of 6.6 kilometres, the Westerschelde Tunnel is the longest road tunnel in the Netherlands. Since it opened in 2003, millions of cars have passed through this tunnel. Molenaar Betonindustrie played an important role in both the delivery and development of the spacers.

During the development of the Westerschelde Tunnel, the quality department identified two requirements that a spacer had to satisfy: speed and stability. At the time, our spacers didn’t meet these characteristics for tunnel construction. They had a spherical head and a surface with wire, but these variations were not stable enough for a round mould. Since the tunnel contains round elements, this was a problem. The spacer would shoot out when the mould was closed and the concrete was poured. After extensive tests and brainstorming sessions, we developed a new product: the MoClip Trio, a spacer with three feet. This spacer turned out to have perfect stability in a round mould, so we supplied a huge quantity of Trio spacers. The Westerschelde Tunnel was therefore a successful project in more ways than one: the MoClip Trio has been frequently and successfully used ever since.
