Project

Storebelt, Denmark

In Denmark, the Great Belt Bridge (or Storebælt) links the islands of Funen and Zealand. The bridge has been in use since 1998 and Molenaar Betonindustrie had an important share in its construction, supplying various concrete products.

Storebælt was a major project in Denmark, including two bridges and a tunnel. It consists of a crossing with a total length of 18 kilometres, on which both trains and cars transit. The Great Belt Bridge enables traffic from Funen to Zealand (and vice versa). In order not to obstruct shipping, it is suspended from the bridge on the east side, high above the water. Besides this bridge, the project includes various tunnels. We supplied various concrete products for both road links. Our dealer in Denmark, HAUCON, was directly involved and delivered our materials. These included blocks made of in-situ concrete, flat variants with wire for the walls of the tunnel, and blocks for both the deck and pillars. We mass-produced the large blocks by machine – a big advantage which saved us a lot of time.
